CHAPTER 10

Ashley

This cannot be happening. There’s absolutely no way in hell this is happening to me.

I jerk through all the clothing in my closet, desperate to find something to wear to the store quickly because I’m freaking out way too badly to wait. Halle is in the shower, and I want to yell for her to hurry but I refrain. She’s already weirded out enough I cut our pool day short due to Jamie giving me the biggest scare of my life.

After reading his text about possibly being pregnant, I laughed it off at first and was about to text back when I realized I hadn’t started my period. I quickly checked my period app and sure enough, I am five days late. Talk about a heart attack. I jumped up from the pool chair so fast Halle choked on her juice.

I ran up the steps at a million miles per hour and Halle followed behind me quickly. I didn’t go into much detail as I showered, but I told her we needed to go to the store as soon as possible and she didn’t ask much else before I hopped into the shower. When I got out, she got in and as I finish picking my clothes out, she comes into my bedroom wearing her towel.

“So, are you going to tell me what the hell is going on, or will I have to beat it out of you?” she asks, a grin on her face until she gets a good look at my face. “Whoa, what’s wrong?”

“I think I am pregnant.” I blurt it out because I can’t think of a better way to say it.

Her eyes go wider than wide, like I knew they would, and she slaps her hands over her mouth.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” she asks from behind her hands.

“Am I acting like I’m kidding, Hal? I’m a fucking mess,” I tell her, throwing my hands up and letting them hit my thighs.

“Yeah, that was a dumb ass question, OMG, okay… so let’s go, right now,” she says, pacing the room, still in her towel. “We’ve got to go get a test.”

She stops and stares at me, and I eye her towel.

“Oh, right. Okay, I’ll hurry,” she assures me, going over to the dresser in my room housing her clothing.

We’re both dressed and out the door in less than ten minutes and in the rush, I completely forget my phone. Not really wanting to wait any longer, I say fuck it, leaving my phone behind as we get in my car. Halle drives because I’m still panicking.

“You know it will all work out even if you are pregnant, right?” Halle asks, probably worried because I’m not talking or singing along with our favorite songs. “Jamie will help you.”

“Halle,” I stress, “it’s not even about him helping me. I’m seventeen and he’s started— actually… he hasn’t even started college yet! We’re kids.”

“Technically, kids don’t have sex like you two…” she jokes, trying to cheer me up but I cut my eyes at her.
